'She Stoops To Conquer' was Oliver Goldsmith's hilarious response to the sentimental, moralistic comedies of late 18th century English Theatre. The romance and wit of this comedy are wrapped in deliberate chaos from the start; no moral compass will show these characters through the enfolding confusion, and love is tossed around without much respect. The rocky progress of the plot - a visit from London to the unfashionable provinces by Sir Charles Marlow and his son to meet the young daughter of his old friend Hardcastle - is undermined at every turn by the actions of 'bold-faced' Tony Lumpkin, Hardcastle's puckish stepson. Miss Hardcastle's ingenuity is tested to the limit by this architect of bedlam, since Tony's plans are haphazard and his purpose is never clear, at times even to himself...
